Dr. Henry C. Lee’s New Book The Gunshots in Croatia Launch Event, with Dr. Ye Guo-Shin as Auctioneer

“We let the evidence speak, give a voice to the deceased, and clear the innocent.”

International forensic science expert Dr. Henry C. Lee held the launch event for his latest book, The Gunshots in Croatia, on December 1. The book is based on Dr. Lee’s investigation of the Croatian “mass grave” incident, conducted under the commission of the United Nations. Written by his wife, author Jiang Xiaping, in her eloquent prose, the book is a gripping and thought-provoking detective novel.

During the event, Dr. Ye Guo-Shin served as the auctioneer, with the first signed copy of The Gunshots in Croatia (Serial No. 001) auctioned off for a staggering 1.2 million NT dollars. All proceeds were donated to the Dr. Henry C. Lee Institute of Forensic Science Education Foundation. The funds will be used to promote forensic science education, foster research and development, strengthen international exchanges, and train professionals in related fields.

The book was published on November 22, Dr. Lee’s birthday, while the launch event was held on December 1, the wedding anniversary of Dr. Lee and Jiang Xiaping. Dr. Lee described the book as “an anniversary gift to my wife.”

“We let the evidence speak, give a voice to the deceased, and clear the innocent.”

“This is a symbol of the countless innocent lives lost in the pursuit of peace and dreams—a direct indictment of those responsible for massacring innocent civilians and orchestrating crimes of ethnic cleansing!”
—Dr. Henry C. Lee

The Republic of Yugoslavia disintegrated in 1991 due to differences in political backgrounds, religious beliefs, and cultural traditions. Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Macedonia all declared independence. Under President Slobodan Milošević, Serbian armed forces and militias carried out a highly orchestrated “ethnic cleansing” in Bosnia and Kosovo, claiming at least 200,000 lives. Since the Nuremberg Trials, there has never been such a strong international call to bring war criminals to justice.

Chinese-American forensic detective Dr. Henry C. Lee, at the request of his student Agron, joined forces with forensic experts Dr. Michael Baden and Dr. Cyril Wecht to form a UN investigative team. They traveled to Croatia to examine the “mass grave” and conduct forensic investigations into the deaths of the massacred civilians.

The outcome of their investigation not only determined whether the perpetrators of this mass atrocity could be brought to trial before the International Court of Justice, ensuring justice for the victims, but also laid the foundation for the training of forensic experts in Croatia following the war.
