Born in 1962 in Gaoshu Township, Pingtung, Liang Yongfei was introduced to calligraphy at an early age by his uncle, Mr. Liang Zhaojin. During his youth, although he attended the Department of Physical Education at Taitung Teachers College, his love and pursuit of calligraphy never stopped. He founded a calligraphy club at school and served as its president, receiving guidance from his mentors, Mr. Tao Jinming, Professor Hong Wenjun, and Principal Chen Dingqi, who laid a solid foundation in calligraphy. Starting with the Ouyang Xun copybook, he later studied various calligraphy styles, including clerical script, seal script, running script, cursive script, and even Jinwen (ancient inscriptions). He also diligently copied various stelae and scripts. After starting his career, he continued to create in his spare time, accumulating nearly 2,000 works during his more than 30 years of public service.
According to Director Liang, his creations start from the East, grounded in the traditional calligraphic ‘rules’—the principles of writing and characters—yet without being restricted by form and structure. Through techniques such as breaking and deciphering characters, he opens up new writing boundaries, showcasing the tension of the strokes to their fullest. Additionally, his work touches upon the West, using varying line thickness, length, curvature, smoothness, and roughness to create a multidimensional sense of space. In the blank areas, he applies color blocks, giving his calligraphy a painterly quality and rhythmic sense. His works also bear similarities to the abstract artists of the late 19th century Western art scene, such as Miró and Mondrian.

Liang Yongfei constantly seeks ‘change’ within the ‘constant’ of calligraphy, and seeks ‘extreme risks’ within ‘stability.’ He has gone through five creative phases: tradition, form and rhyme, transformation, vibrancy, and boundlessness. Ultimately, he has developed his own unique artistic language and completed the transformation from a ‘calligrapher’ to a ‘calligraphy artist.’
Dr. Ye Guoshin stated that both he and Director Liang are art and culture enthusiasts and professionals, with many mutual friends and shared areas of collaboration. In the realm of calligraphy and painting, Director Liang’s deep understanding and familiarity with the styles and features of past masters, brush techniques, composition and creative philosophy, as well as his thorough research on and unique insights into the philosophies, methods, and techniques of ancient, modern, and contemporary Western artists, have earned his heartfelt admiration.
The opening of the exhibition attracted a large number of art lovers, with Director Liang’s works especially favored by emerging fashion designer Ms. Wang Sihan. Ms. Wang’s ‘Love Letter’ series of designer handbags have been praised and collected by Princess Kate of the UK. She also encouraged Director Liang to continue creating and to showcase his talent on the international art stage.
