Opening of Taipei Veterans General Hospital Calligraphy and Painting Gallery – Masterpieces by Renowned Artists Witness the History of Medical Humanities

On May 20, Taipei Veterans General Hospital officially launched the “Calligraphy and Painting Gallery,” featuring a rich collection of ink treasures by modern masters. The gallery integrates medical space with artistic ambiance, embodying a deep concern for humanity through the fusion of art and healing. The hospital’s art collection has a long-standing history, including works by renowned calligraphy and painting masters such as Chang Dai-chien, Huang Chun-pi, and Chiang Chao-shen, highlighting the profound connection between medical institutions and the cultural elite.
The gallery was established under the initiative of Superintendent Dr. Wei-Ming, who also spearheaded efforts to beautify the hospital environment, including the creation of “Forget-Worry Lake.” The gallery showcases and archives valuable artworks accumulated over the years, reflecting the vision of a humanistic medical setting. At the opening ceremony, the Superintendent paid tribute to the late artist Master Han Chin-Tien and unveiled his monumental piece Garden of Ancient Cypress, symbolizing the resilience and unwavering spirit of medical professionals. This significant work, donated by the Han family in accordance with the artist’s wishes, is grand in scale and rich in meaning, now standing as a treasured highlight of the gallery.

The establishment of the gallery has received generous support from various sectors of society, including Jinhua Hall, Chairman Huang Chien-Li and his wife, and Dr. Yeh Guo-Shin of Mo Hai Lou. Dr. Yeh also donated works by renowned artists such as Fu Yi-Yao, Tai Hsiang-Chou, and Chiang Ming-Hsien, enriching the gallery’s depth and diversity. Master Chu Chen-Nan contributed a calligraphy piece to encourage medical staff in their pursuit of professional excellence.
