Taiwan’s Leading Calligraphy and Painting Authentication Expert, Dr. Ye Guo-Shin, Lectures at Taipei Police Department on Techniques for Detecting Forgeries

Dr. Ye Guo-Shin, Taiwan’s foremost authority on art authentication—renowned for verifying the authenticity of works by masters such as Hu Shi and Zhang Daqian—was invited on the 5th to speak at the Forensic Science Center of the Taipei City Police Department. He shared his expertise on ancient calligraphy and painting authentication with forensic officers, who found the lecture highly beneficial.
For over 20 years, Dr. Ye has been a leading figure in the field of art authentication. He spent more than a decade visiting major museums worldwide, studying and analyzing firsthand original works of calligraphy and painting. His research culminated in Taiwan’s first systematic scholarly work on authentication, Mo Hai Chun Qiu—Collection and Connoisseurship Research into Chinese Painting and Calligraphy.
Dr. Ye is also the first scholar to earn a Ph.D. in Art Authentication from the UK. He has been appointed as a calligraphy and painting authentication lecturer for the Criminal Investigation Bureau’s Forensic Science Division and has long provided authentication services for auction houses worldwide. Recognizing his expertise, law enforcement agencies periodically invite him to deliver lectures and share his knowledge.
One attending officer noted that Dr. Ye’s lecture on the 5th offered professional yet accessible insights into brushwork, ink traces, paper quality, forgery techniques, and telltale flaws in counterfeit works. The training provided frontline officers with a deeper understanding of art authentication. The officer added that he had gained valuable insights and would share them with his colleagues in criminal investigations.
